Duct cleaning and sanitisation of 21 isolation rooms

What was done in every room

Each isolation room has one fan-coil unit (FCU) supplying air through a flexible duct and ceiling diffuser, and an exhaust path through a floor-level louvre, an access panel and a riser that carries air up to the exhaust unit and its two HEPA filters. The same procedure was applied room by room. Rooms were sanitised first in batches, then cleaned one at a time.

1. Terminal sanitisation (fogging)The sealed room is fogged with Bioactive Micro-Organism Surface Treatment (BMST, Airestec) using a ULV fogger, in full PPE.
2. Supply / FCU sideThe ceiling diffuser is removed and washed. The flexible duct is brushed with a rotary drill brush and vacuumed (HEPA vacuum). With the FCU off, the duct is blown through with compressed air, then sprayed with Bioactive Micro-Organism Duct Treatment (BMDT) so the treatment reaches the FCU coil.
3. Exhaust sideThe floor louvre and silicone-sealed access panel are removed. The plenum and riser are brush-cleaned, blown with compressed air and vacuumed. With the exhaust unit running, BMDT is sprayed in from the bottom so it is drawn up the riser.
4. HEPA housing and riserWith both HEPA filters out and all units off, the duct robot is driven into the riser to blow compressed air as far as it reaches, followed by the air gun and BMDT spray. The robot's camera records the riser interior (footage in each room section).
5. Close-outAll units are switched back on, a final BMDT spray is applied from the exhaust louvre, units are switched off, panels and louvres are washed, re-sealed with silicone and refitted. HEPA filter replacement and the air test are by the other appointed teams.

How the duct robot cleans the exhaust riser

A schematic cross-section of one isolation room above the ceiling: the HEPA housing, the horizontal duct run and the riser down to the floor-level exhaust louvre. It walks through the sequence used in every room, from removing the filters to the two-sided BMDT treatment and re-sealing.

All 21 rooms by week

Each stage is ticked where the report holds a photograph; ✓^v means the evidence is a still taken from site video. Room lists for weeks 2–5 are the client's shutdown notices; week 1 covers the five remaining rooms of the 21-room schedule.

Findings and follow-up items

Conditions noted in the daily reports that the client should be aware of, each tied to the photo or video that records it. None of these affect the completion of the duct cleaning itself.

Condensation and biofilm on the main FCU duct

Significant condensation and black staining on the main FCU duct above the ceiling. The section has no access opening or cover, so its interior could not be cleaned.

Follow-up For the client: check the FCU insulation and condensate drainage on this unit. An access opening would be needed to clean this section internally.

Ceiling in poor condition

FCU-side opening obstructed by formwork

Access to the FCU-side ceiling opening was blocked by formwork. The team crossed over from the adjacent staff room / pantry along a beam; nothing was cut or removed. The robot went in from the other side.

Follow-up Completed by the normal procedure. The room was first reported as 9B and corrected to 10B.

Odour noticed

An odour was noticed in the room during the exhaust-side and FCU work. No other difference from the other rooms.

Water dripping onto the floor

Water was dripping onto the floor. Possible sources: a square tank on the roof, or the FCU side once the ceiling cover was opened (wet insulation visible in the video).

Follow-up Confirmed complete from the photo record: plenum and diffuser cleaned 14:33 – 14:39 and the BMDT spray applied at the refitted louvre.

Exhaust filter housing outside the room

Unlike the other rooms, the exhaust filter housing is located outside the room; the team climbed the wall to reach it.

Damaged filter opening; filters removed and bagged

The exhaust-side filter opening was slightly damaged but could be opened. Both HEPA filters were removed, photographed and bagged.

Follow-up Record for the client: the opening was already damaged. Filter removal is outside the scope and was done only for the first and last rooms on the timetable. Photos of the bagged filters are on the site team's phone and have been requested.

Coverage, inferences and open items

• Video. Every clip in this report plays in the interactive version and is compiled into one video per room (title cards mark each stage). Where a stage was filmed but not photographed, a still from the video is used and labelled as such.
• Room attribution. Omar's labelled photos (room number written on the image) anchor each day. Photos sent by the second team carry no room label and are placed by time window and visible room features; those attributions are listed in the organised-folder index.
• Week-1 numbering. The week-1 summary names levels only; ISO 2 (NICU), ISO 7 (ICU), ISO 27 (9A), ISO 27 (10A) and ISO 17 (Level 12) are the five rooms of the 21 not covered by the later weekly lists.
• Daily reports. Omar's dictated daily reports for 5, 12 and 19 Oct are reproduced under each week and their findings are collected in the Site observations section. Three transcription slips were read in context: "fitness side" as FCU side, "Level 2" as Level 10 and "FDU" as the roof tank. The 19 Oct report left 11 ISO 27 unconfirmed; the photo record shows it was completed at 14:33 – 14:39 that day.
• Robot footage. The duct robot's camera recorded the exhaust riser while it blew the duct through. Idle time was cut from the 23 recordings automatically (motion detection), leaving 4 h 4 min of footage across 19 rooms, embedded in the room sections of the interactive report. Recordings are named by date only; they were matched to rooms by the day's work order, and four are marked "to be confirmed". The two Level 4 NICU rooms have no matched recording.
